They both stay late. The hush of the cathedral folds around them like a shawl.
She notices him first near the back, tall, coat still dusted with twilight, hands tucked into pockets as if afraid to touch anything holy. He looks up when the last organ note dies, and their eyes find the space between confession and light. He doesn’t smile. He doesn’t introduce himself. The air is thick with incense and the faint copper tang of old candles; their breaths sync without thinking.
Yn moves down the center aisle, slow enough that her shoes whisper against stone. He falls into step beside her at a distance that is polite and deliberately close. They pass a row of empty pews where votive candles gutter and a shaft of stained glass paints them in bruised color. The cathedral holds them like a secret. The world outside is muffled, a different religion entirely.
“Beautiful,” he says, so soft it might have been part of the building’s echo.
She hums something that could be agreement and could be a lie. Up close she sees the tired line at the corner of his eyes, the tiny scar on his knuckle, the way his throat moves when he swallows. Nothing about him explains the tug in her chest; that is what makes it dangerous. Desire is rarely tidy.
